This article is for any of you who might be travelling up nth or sth from Nth Qld as we have travelled this road 18mths ago and missed this place somehow.
Last month when we were on our road trip back from Darwin, we stayed at Yepoon out of Rockhampton. While there I picked up a brochure about this Bird Sanctuary and as it was on our way, we thought that we should pop in this time.
It is located north of the Hervey Bay turn off and about 5 kms north of Childers on the corner of the Bruce Highway and Old Creek Road Apple tree Qld. Even the address is inviting....and plenty of parking for vans...
Flying High Bird Sanctuary is the Largest Walk through aviary in Australia covering nearly 2 acres with a height or over 7m. The walking is easy and wheel chair accessible with wide concrete paths around the main sections and not too steep.
Within the aviary many species of Australian and Exotic parrots and finches fly free in a natural habitat created especially for them.
The majority of birds are flying free but some species which are incompatible are housed in separate aviaries.
There are seats along the way which allow you to sit and watch these beautiful birds interact with each other in a non threatening environment. There are also information notices placed strategically around the walk for you to refer to.
We spent quite a bit of time there and probably would have spent more if we weren’t on our way to another place of interest called Mon Repo where I saw a huge Sea Turtle come up out of the sea like some historic creature. It lumbered its way up the beach to nest in the soft sand, slowly made its nest and laid between 30-50 eggs, covered the nest and lumber back down into the sea. What an experience. The whole thing took nearly three hours. The Sea Turtle doesn’t look after the nest so the rangers transfer the eggs into a safer hole higher up into the sandbanks for safety from the sea and any predators.
